APC Line Interactive UPS

Line Interactive UPS typically incorporate an Automatic Voltage Regulator. The AVR allows the UPS to effectively step up or step down the incoming line voltage without switching to battery power. Advantage of Line-interactive UPS is it reduces the number of transfers to the battery. So the lifetime of the batteries is extended. Protect secondary electronics from surges and spikes without reducing battery power used to run primary electronics during an outage by using APC line-interactive UPS.

APC Online or Double Conversion UPS

An online UPS uses a “double conversion” method of accepting AC input, rectifying to DC for passing through the rechargeable battery (or battery strings), then inverting back to 120 V/230 V AC for powering the protected equipment.

In an online (aka double-conversion) UPS, the input AC is charging the backup battery source which provides power to the output inverter, so the failure of the input AC won’t cause activation of the transfer switch. That is to say, if a power loss occurs, the rectifier will simply drop out of the circuit and the batteries will keep the power steady and unchanged. No transfer time during the failure. When power is restored, the rectifier will resume carrying most of the load and begin charging the batteries, though the charging current may be limited to prevent the high-power rectifier from overheating the batteries and boiling off the electrolyte.

While an online APC UPS is the top of the line protection available, it can be costly. These units are best suited for sensitive mission-critical equipment that handles very sizable amounts of power. Many people are looking for great protection that won’t hurt the budget too much, which is where the line interactive units come into play. Line interactive UPSs are a great balance between protection and quality. 

In short, APC offline UPS or APC interactive UPS may be cheaper, but they won’t provide you the same level of protection as APC double conversion online UPS system. If you want your mission-critical equipment to survive any of the nine power anomalies we discussed, an online double conversion system is the best option for your facility.
